A 32-year-old man has been found guilty of the rape and murder of 11-year-old Stacha Arends in the Western Cape High Court on Thursday.
According to Eyewitness News, Randy Tango pleaded guilty to raping and murdering Arends, whose family lived two houses away from him in Mitchells Plain.
Tango maintains that after raping Arends vaginally and anally at his home, he strangled her to death in fear that she would tell her mother what he had done.
He explained that he killed her to avoid going to jail for raping her.
According to Eyewitness News, Tango told the court that after murdering Stacha, he wrapped her body in a sheet and placed her in a rubbish bin.
Tango then pushed the rubbish bin to the sports field where he dumped her.
Tango was facing six counts of rape but was not charged for the others on account of a strong lack of evidence.
Arends went missing on 27 March, reports News24.
Her body was found on a sports field near her home the following day.
