The vote which will determine the new leadership of the African National Congress (ANC) at the party’s 54th national conference is underway and the results are expected to be announced on Monday.
The conference follows President Jacob Zuma’s earlier announcement that he is ready to step down.
After several delays, the vote eventually began around midnight on Monday.
More than 4 700 delegates from nine provinces form part of the vote that will determine the future of the ANC.
During the nominations process on Sunday evening, it was established that Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa and former African Union chairperson Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma are the only candidates in the running for the party’s presidential position.
Several candidates, including Naledi Pandor and Zweli Mkhize, withdrew their nominations for their respective positions.
