A Johannesburg SAPS officer and two members of the Hawks have been arrested for armed robbery, in which a total of R1m was stolen.
According to Gauteng Hawks spokesperson Captain Ndivhuwo Mulamu, Warrant officer Tefo Maimane (49), Warrant officer Eric Melaphi (41), both members of the Hawks Serious Commercial Crimes, and Detective Constable Khumbulo Gadivhana (36) from Hillbrow SAPS, stand accused of stealing R1m in an armed robbery.
A fourth suspect remains at large.
Mulamu says that the suspects were arrested following an investigation into claims that they had pulled over a car in Norwood and stole money from the driver.
After stopping the vehicle for “driving recklessly,” the police officials and the driver drove to Norwood Police Station, where the driver was reportedly searched.
It is alleged that they found two boxes of cash in the man’s possession and confiscated it.
The suspects allegedly left the police station with the cash, divided R1m of it among themselves and returned the remainder to the driver.
The suspects appeared briefly at the Johannesburg Magistrates Court on Tuesday.
The case has been postponed to 27 December for a formal bail application.
