At least six people have been injured in a stampede at the Capricorn TVET College in Polokwane, where student hopefuls were queuing to register on Thursday morning.

According to News24, those injured were between the ages of 19 and 26.

It is understood that scores of people gathered outside of the college before the gates opened, in order to be first in line for registration.

Some of them had apparently been queuing since Wednesday evening.

Speaking to Eyewitness News, South African Police Service’s Motlafela Mojapelo has said: “As the security officials opened the gate, a stampede ensued, resulting in one of the students getting seriously injured and the other five collapsed due to the stampede. They were taken to hospital for medical treatment. The police were then deployed in the area.”
