At least one of the Gupta brothers are expected to be detained as the Hawks await the approval of arrest warrants.
According to City Press, the warrants must be signed off by prosecutors at the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) before it can take effect.
However, it is unknown whether the warrant has been issued for Ajay, Atul or Rajesh, also known as Tony.
A Hawks insider revealed to City Press that, in addition to the warrant of arrest for one of the brothers, warrants have been issued for an undisclosed number of the family’s associates as well.
Furthermore, the NPA has been given permission to freeze assets worth R1.6 billion belonging to companies associated with the Guptas, including McKinsey and Trillian, reports Iol.
In response to this, the Democratic Alliance (DA) issued a statement stating that they welcome the summons.
“This preservation order… is only the first step in holding those responsible for looting the people’s money and we expect to see other such action against the President’s son, Duduzane Zuma, and the President himself so that they can be held accountable for their role in State Capture,” reads the statement.
