The official date for the State of the Nation Address (SONA) has finally been scheduled.
According to the South African Government News Agency, newly elected President Cyril Ramaphosa will deliver the SONA at 7pm on Friday.
Parliament has said that the SONA will be a “full ceremonial occasion” involving a ceremonial parade with military traditions, drills and ethos of the army, the navy and the air force of South Africa.
A total of 1 120 guests are expected to attend the event.
The SONA follows several events in Parliament, one of which includes former President Jacob Zuma’s insistence on delivering the SONA, despite calls for his resignation.
The SONA, that was initially scheduled for 8 February, had been postponed to “a date to be announced later” after an “argument between two parties,” announced Communications Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi-Ngubane last week.
Reports assert that the SONA has never been postponed before.
In another unusual move, the ANC MPs scheduled a parliamentary caucus on the day that the SONA should have taken place.
Zuma surprised the Nation on Thursday by submitting his letter of resignation to Parliament.
Subsequently, Ramaphosa was elected as the new president.
