Government to cut data costs

Written by on February 20, 2018

Minister of Economic Development Ebrahim Patel says that cutting down data costs will be a priority as part of an attempt to align the South African economy with the fourth industrial revolution.

Speaking during the debate of the State of the Nation Address (SONA) on Monday, Patel said that technology has had a huge impact on economies and society.

The digital economy is central to the fourth industrial revolution, thereby placing pressure on current data costs, explained Patel.

Patel says that the digital revolution could present an influx of opportunities for growth for South Africa.

According to Patel, government will prepare for the digital revolution by aiming to develop the intellectual property base for the economy.

Government is set to work closely with the Digital Industrial Revolution Commission and update Parliament on any progress made.
