Five police officers have been killed in an attack at Engcobo Police Station, Eastern Cape.
According to a police statement, a group of unidentified suspects entered the precinct in the early hours of Wednesday morning and killed three officers.
Brigadier Vishnu Naidoo confirmed to News24 that the officers had been shot.
Police say the suspects fled in a police van carrying two more officers.
The kidnapped police officers were later found dead with gunshot wounds.
The motive for the attack remains unknown.
However, police have confirmed that firearms were stolen from the precinct.
Minister of Police Fikile Mbalula has called for police officers to remain level-headed while the suspects are being searched for.
“I call for calm from our members, as I am aware how emotional this horrific incident is. Today I have instructed General Khehla Sitole to hunt those barbaric criminals and bring them to book. They must regret the day they sat and planned to attack the state.” Mbalula said.
“These are very dangerous criminals, I urge people to remain vigilant and calm and report any possible suspicion to the police,” Mbalula added.
