Mortimer Saunders (40), the man accused of raping and murdering three-year-old Courtney Pieters, is set to be tried on 14 May.
According to News24, the State and the defence on Friday confirmed that they were ready to proceed with the rape and murder trial.
This comes nearly one year after Pieters’ body was found in a shallow grave in Epping, Cape Town.
The toddler went missing from her home in Elsies River on 4 May 2017.
Nine days later, Pieters’ body was found by a search party made up of police and community members.
Saunders was arrested the following day.
It is understood that Saunders had been living in the same house as the Pieters family and had been a good friend of the toddler’s father.
